Hi, Heidi Kussurelis with the Heidi Kussurelis Insurance Agency. Today, I received a great question on Google and the question was, what is the right limit that I should carry on my auto insurance? And that is a great question.
If you asked me, liability is the most important part of your insurance policy. We don’t know how severe an accident could be. If you cause an accident, is it going to be with one vehicle or multi vehicles? Will one person be injured or multiple people be injured? How severe will the injuries be? These are all unknowns. So having very strong, higher liability limits is so important.
In our state of Michigan, the state highly recommends people to carry at least $250,000 per accident; 500 or $250,000 per person, 500,000 per accident and if you don’t go with those limits, you choose a lower limit, the state actually requires us to collect a form, a waiver, stating that you understand the risks that you’re taking.
Our agency recommends our clients even carry higher limits if possible and even consider a personal umbrella policy that offers an additional million dollars over their home and auto liability limits, because we know that you get up every day to build your assets and we get up every day to protect those assets. Thanks for the question and keep them coming.
