Hi, I’m Heidi Kussurelis with the Heidi Kussurelis Agency. And today, I am going to answer a question that I receive often for many of my clients. How do I keep my insurance costs down when adding a youthful driver? It is so exciting when our 16-year-olds get their driver’s license. But boy, for us parents, it can be very, very scary and the insurance costs can be scary too. However, I have some ideas for you.
My first idea is to use your insurance telematics programs. You can get significant discounts by using the telemedicine program. And also provide you a lot of information to help your youthful driver by telling you if they’re having issues with hard breaking, fast acceleration, or maybe they’re driving a lot more miles than you thought. You can share this information with them and help them to improve their driving skills.
Some companies also offer driving safety courses. So they can sign up to complete some auto modules. And they’re video games, a lot of fun. And if they finished that in the allotted time, you get a discount on your insurance policy. Also, some insurance companies offer a parent choice deductible. So if you have a high-valued vehicle that your useful driver very rarely drives, you can choose to add this parent choice deductible, which adds $2,500 to your current collision deductible if your youthful driver is involved in an accident with that car. So that does add a significant discount.
Lastly, if you have a vehicle that only needs liability can be helpful for the youthful driver because the comprehensive and collision coverage, which is the auto physical damage coverage for your vehicle is quite expensive with youthful drivers. So a liability-only vehicle will help save you some money. I hope these ideas help.
